Learn MoreHelping Cope with Treatment
Our core program funds the Child Life Specialist position at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care. Through play, learning, and self-expression, children learn to minimize the stress of cancer treatment. The advocate works with children and their families, helping them to cope with the often frightening treatment for childhood cancer.
Providing Financial Assistance for Families
A diagnosis of childhood cancer often means financial hardship for families. Often a parent must leave employment for long periods to care for their sick child. Income drops as medical expenses escalate. We help families with expenses for housing, utility bills, food, and other household expenses that health insurance does not cover. Social Workers at Wolfson Children's Hospital and Nemours Children's Specialty Care administer our Financial Assistance Program. Regardless of income level, families facing financial hardship can receive help.
Emotional and Practical Support During and After Treatment
During treatment and afterwards, children and their families need many different types of care and support. Our programs and services offer families the emotional, educational, and practical support they need during this challenging experience. We sponsor a family retreat weekend at Camp Boggy Creek each year. We also provide educational materials to families.
The Christy Fund is a restricted account established in memory of Christy Keirnan to ensure funding for the Child Life Specialist position at Nemours Children's Health. A crucial role on the child's healthcare team, the Child Life Specialist provides a friendly face to an otherwise frightened child.
